Is Owing a Still & Distilling of Alcohol Legal?

The laws around owning a still and distilling of alcohol vary widely throughout the word. On the most part though owing a still and distilling alcohol is not illegal provided you have all the required permits and licensing in place. Do you think Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, Johnnie Walker, Maker’s Mark etc. are producing their spirit illegally…No, of course not! They do however have all the necessary licensing and permits in place to allow for the legal distillation, storage and sale of their product.

When it comes to distilling of alcohol for personal consumption though the law is quite clear, most countries prohibit the distillation of alcohol for personal use. There are a few exceptions though like New Zealand and Russia which permit the production of alcohol for personal consumption but not for private sale.  In some states of America it is legal to distill fuel alcohol provided you have a "federal fuel alcohol permit."
